Device TypesDuring initial discovery, MSP Center Plus categorizes the network devices
into servers, printers, switches, routers and firewalls. For proper
classification, install and start the SNMP agent on all the managed devices. Devices that are not SNMP enabled get classified under Desktops category with their Device Type as "unknown" [can be seen in the device snapshot page]. In such cases, configure WMI/Telnet credentials and go that device snapshot page and change the device category and type.
MSP Center Plus comes with nearly 600 device types, which carry the
initial configurations to classify the devices into the pre-defined
categories, and to associate monitors to them. The device types
enables you to effect a configuration once and is applied to several
devices at a time whenever there is a change.
These Device Types carry the information required to classify the devices
and to associate relevant monitors. You can define your own templates
and modify the existing ones.
Adding a New/Custom Device Type Apart
from the available Device Types, MSP Center Plus allows you to create
Custom Device Types, provided you have the Device has a system OID. Here are the steps:
- Go to Network Monitoring-> Admin-> Device Types.
- Click New Device Type button. Add Device Type window opens.

- Enter the Device Type and Device Identifiers (system OID).
- Select the Category and Vendor Name. If Vendor Name does not exist, select Add New Vendor and enter the Vendor Name and press + button. The Vendor Name gets added to the list.
- Monitoring Interval gets filled automatically according to the Category selected. However, you can modify it if necessary.
- Select the Monitoring Template.
Monitoring Template decides the parameters/performance metrics,
monitoring interval & protocol (SNMP/WMI). If you can't find a
suitable Monitoring Template, then add a new Monitoring Template.
- The
Device Type Image also gets selected automatically according to the
Category selected. However, if required you can change the image by
click on Change Image.
- Click Add button to add the Device Type.
Device Type is successfully added. Now apply this Device Type to the required devices.
